How do I get a Library card?
Bring a photo ID with current address (and an additional acceptable form of identification if photo ID is not current) to any of our three locations. Please see Your Library Card for complete details on eligibility and documentation requirements.
You may also register for a library card online. To begin using online services today, fill out this online registration form. Then bring a photo ID with current address (or acceptable form of identification) to any of our three locations within 30 days of registering to activate your library card, which will allow you to check out items and use the library’s computer workstations. A parent or guardian must assume responsibility for materials borrowed by a person under 16 years of age; therefore, it is the parent's or guardian's identification that is required for registration of a minor.
Do I have to renew my library card? Does my library card expire?
Fauquier County Public Library cards expire after two years to ensure patron records remain up-to-date. Expired cards must be renewed in order to check out items and to reserve and view patron records online.
To renew an expired card, present the original card or provide current identification with proof of address at your local library. Or, call your library and be prepared to give library staff your card number. Once your card is verified and renewed, it may be used to borrow materials, check out e-books and access the library’s online resources. The card itself does not need to be replaced, nor is there a fee for renewing a card.
If you registered for a library card online, you will need to activate your card within 30 days. After 30 days, your library card will expire and be deleted from our system.
Why does my library card expire?
Having cards expire helps us keep our database current and ensures that all library correspondence goes to the correct address. The card itself does not need to be replaced, nor is there a fee for renewing your card.
What if my card is lost, damaged or stolen?
In the event that a card is lost or stolen, it is the patron’s responsibility to notify the library immediately. Upon notification, a reported lost/stolen card will be blocked from further use. A new card and number will be issued upon re-registration.
A fee of $1 is charged for replacement of a lost or damaged card ($2 for key chain replacement). Proper identification must be presented before a replacement card can be issued.
What do I do if my card number is being used by someone else?
If you believe that someone else is using your card number, you should notify your local library immediately. The library will deactivate the card and you will need to request a replacement card.
How old does my child have to be before s/he gets a library card?
There are no age restrictions on getting a Fauquier County Public Library card. All children under 16 must have a parent or guardian accept responsibility by signing the child's library card application.
