Voter Registration

Voter Registration

If you are already registered to vote with your current name and residence address, you do not need to re-apply for voter registration. However, if you have moved recently or changed your name, you must update your voter registration record with the Registrar's Office to reflect these changes before the voter registration deadline.

Please call the Registrar’s Office if you are unsure if you are registered to vote or you can check you voter registration status online.

For any change to your voter registration record please complete and submit a new voter registration application to the Registrar's Office.  The Virginia voter registration application is available online or by contacting the Registrar’s Office by phone or e-mail and an application will be sent to you.

The voter registration deadline is always 21 days before each regularly scheduled primary or general election.

Paper Applications
A completed paper voter registration application is considered to have met the voter registration deadline by either 1) being postmarked on or before the voter registration deadline date or 2) by delivering it in-person to the Registrar's Office (or another designated voter registration agency) on or before the voter registration deadline date.

Online Voter Registration Portal Applications
A voter registration application completed online through the Virginia Citizen Portal website is considered to have met the voter registration deadline if submitted on or before 11:59PM on the voter registration deadline date.  Only applicants with a Driver's License or Identification Card issued by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles can submit an application electronically through the Voter Registration Portal website and those applications may also be considered untimely if missing material information.  All other applications completed using the Voter Registration Portal website that are required to be printed onto paper, signed by the applicant and delivered to the Registrar's Office will be subject to the provisions described above for Paper Applications.

Voter registration applications that fail to meet the statutory voter registration deadline date are required to be held by the Registrar’s Office and cannot be processed until after the voter registration rolls legally reopen again in Virginia which is always the day after the election date
