Human remains recovered in the Midland area of Fauquier County have been identified.
On the evening of Sunday, March 4, 2012, the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 3000 block of Midland Road where a relic hunter using a metal detector had discovered human remains. After finding a firearm, the relic hunter searched further and discovered clothing and what appeared to be human remains.
Sheriff’s Office Detectives excavated the site and recovered the skeletal remains and other evidence on Monday, March 5. The remains were taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for examination and identification. Certain forensic evidence was recovered at that time.
Initial investigation revealed a subject named Stephen Nye had lived in the area and had been missing since 2005. The firearm and clothing found matched the descriptions of Mr. Nye at the time of his disappearance.
The remains were examined by the Virginia Department of Forensic Science. They were also examined by a Physical Anthropologist at the Smithsonian Institution, Department of Anthropology.
The remains have subsequently been identified by DNA technology as belonging to Stephen Nye. Examination of the remains and forensic evidence also determined Mr. Nye died as the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
