The No. 18 Schoolhouse, 7592 E. Main Street, Marshall

Built in 1887, the one-room schoolhouse was “whites only” until 1910, when those students were transferred to a larger school. Number 18 then became a school for African-American students until its closure in 1964. Abandoned and neglected, the little building at the northwest corner of Rt. 55 and Whiting Road deteriorated until a small, determined group set out to save it.

The preservation project includes an innovative wastewater treatment system that incorporates a constructed wetland. The landscape is tended by participants in the County Master Gardeners program.

Learn more about this historic Fauquier site, and honor the volunteers who made its renovation and preservation a reality.
