Financial Assistance Programs

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) – (formerly Food Stamps)

The SNAP Program is administered by the US Department of Agriculture and is operated on a local level in Virginia.  The program is designed to help prevent hunger and malnutrition by insuring a better diet for low income households.  It is not designed to supply all food needs, only to supplement them.

Civil Rights Policy and Procedures (How to file a complaint)

The Virginia Department of Social Services and local Virginia Social Services offices prohibit discrimination in their programs and activities on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, disability, and where applicable, sex, marital status, family status, parental status, religion, sexual orientation, genetic information, political beliefs, reprisal, or because all or part of an individual’s income is derived from an public assistance program.

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families – (TANF)

TANF is a program which provides temporary financial assistance to eligible families with children who are deprived of the support of one or both parents due to death, disability or absence of parent(s).

Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare – (VIEW)

Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare (VIEW) program is a workforce program administered through local departments of social services.  The VIEW Program provides employment and training services to TANF recipients who are required to participate in the program as a condition of eligibility and to TANF recipients who volunteer to participate.

Energy Assistance

The Energy Assistance Program is made up of multiple components:

  • Fuel Assistance – helps eligible households with costs of heating their homes
  • Crisis Assistance – helps eligible households in heating emergency situations with primary heat security deposits, primary heating fuel/utility bills, and repair/replacement of heating equipment.
  • Cooling Assistance – helps eligible households with cooling equipment purchases or repairs and with electric bill.

Auxiliary Grants – (AG)

AG is a financial assistance supplement for recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and certain other aged, blind or disabled individuals who are residing in a licensed Assisted Living Facility (ALF) or in an Adult Foster Care (AFC) home approved by Social Services.

General Relief – (GR)

GR is a short term assistance program to help with specific emergency situations related to housing and utilities.  This is a local program and application must be made at our local office.  You must be a Fauquier County resident and have an emergency need.

Medicaid – Family & Children; Aged, Blind & Disabled (ABD; Long Term Care (LTC)

Medicaid provides payment for health and medical care for people who meet the specified requirements for income and resource limits.  All medical services must be provided by Medicaid enrolled providers who bill the program directly for their services.  In some instances, a small co-payment is required.

Child Care Assistance – (CC)

The Child Care Assistance program provides funding to enhance the quality, affordability, and supply of child care available to Virginia’s families.  Child Care services are child-centered, family-focused services that support the family goals of economic self-sufficiency and child development by providing for supervision, protection, and well-being of a child while the parent is participating in an approved activity.

Child Care Providers

There are four major types of child care providers:

  1. Voluntary Registered
  2. Licensed Family Day Home
  3. Licensed Centers
  4. Religiously Exempt Child Day Centers

Other Services

Dominion EnergyShare

Dominion EnergyShare provides heating and cooling assistance to families that are eligible for assistance through their program.  The Department of Social Services administers the program for Fauquier County residents in need.  For more information and to complete an application, please come by Social Services Monday through Friday between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM.  You are required to meet an income guideline, have a face to face interview, have a cutoff notice from your utility company and to bring your utility bill with you.  There are two seasons: 

  • Cooling Season runs from June 1st until October 31st
  • Heating Season runs from November 1st until May 31st

Funding is available on a first come, first serve basis until funds are depleted.  For more information, please call 540-422-8400

Earned Income Tax Credit – (EITC)

You’ve earned it, why not claim it? The EITC is a tax credit for lower income workers who meet certain rules.
