A Resolution to Award Bids for the Purchase and Installation of Equipment for a Public Safety Paging System

Topic Description:

In conjunction with the replacement of the Public Safety Radio System, the Board of Supervisors authorized the replacement of the existing paging system.  The radio consultant was utilized to design the new system and frequencies were identified in the UHF band for the pagers.  The new system will provide simulcast capabilities and will utilize portions of the 800 MHz radio system infrastructure to improve coverage.

The system concept was presented to and approved by the Fire and Rescue Association.  Originally, Motorola was asked to provide a quote on the system as a possible change order under the existing radio contract.  It was determined to bid the system in order to obtain improved pricing.  Specifications were prepared and bids released in 2003.

Requested Action of the Board of Supervisors:

Consider adoption of the attached resolution.

Financial Impacts Analysis:

Funds in the amount of $ 288,831 have been identified within the Public Safety Radio budget for upgrading the existing paging system.  These funds are augmented by a Homeland Security grant in the amount of $100,000 which has been awarded for the purchase of pagers. The pagers will be assigned to the Fire and Rescue Association and distributed to fire and rescue companies.
