Route 601 is designated Hopewell Road in Fauquier County and
Waterfall Road in Prince William County. That route has
become a cut through for heavy truck traffic between State
Route 15 and Interstate 66. Hopewell Road was not
designated or intended to serve heavy truck traffic nor is
Hopewell Road recommended for trucks due to its design. As
a result, heavy truck traffic causes safety problems on
Hopewell Road. The Prince William County Board of
Supervisors has requested that the Commonwealth
Transportation Board examine restricting truck traffic on
Route 601, Hopewell Road and Waterfall Road, between State
Route 15 and Interstate 66. The Prince William County Board
of Supervisors has requested that the Board of Supervisors
of Fauquier County also make the same request. Should truck
traffic be restricted, an alternative route exists via James
Madison Highway – State Route 15, to Interstate 66 West, to
Exit 31 Hopewell Road. The alternate route is depicted on
the attached map.
Section
46.2-809 of the Code of Virginia mandates that a public
hearing must be held by the local governing body to receive
public comments on restricting through-truck traffic on any
part of a secondary highway. The Board of Supervisors
wishes to schedule a public hearing on this matter. The
attached resolution, if adopted, requests that the
Commonwealth Transportation Board restrict through-truck
traffic on Hopewell Road/Waterfall Road in the Scott
Magisterial District.
