Review of County Tourism Program

Topic Description:

In 2002, the Fauquier County Tourism Program was initiated when the Board of Supervisors approved the establishment of a Tourism Advisory Committee.  The Board of Supervisors approved the creation of a Tourism Coordinator position, in the FY- 2004 County Budget, to be placed in the Department of Economic Development.  The position was filled on July 21, 2003. The Tourism Coordinator position was approved without additional funding in the Economic Development Department operating budget.

 

The Tourism Coordinator, in concert with the Tourism Advisory Committee, has worked to develop a tourism program that will be inclusive of the entire County.  The Tourism Program design is based upon developing a tourism program that incorporates the tourism activities, attractions, retail establishments, Towns, commercial centers, and accommodations found throughout the entire County.

The attached summary provides answers to the following questions:

 

What are the mission and goals for the Tourism Program?

What has the Tourism Program accomplished to date?

How may tourism results be measured?

Auxiliary County Tourism Statistics.

 

The Tourism Advisory Committee has recently re-structured its membership to give voice to as many tourism interests as possible.  The approved mission and goals for the Tourism Advisory Committee is attached.

 

 

Requested Action of the Board of Supervisors:  

It is requested that the Board of Supervisors review and consider the information provided.

Financial Impacts Analysis:

During the current year, the County provides financial support for tourism through partial funding of the Visitors Center in the amount of $62,500, and through staff and support services included in the Economic Development Department budget in the amount of $60,000.

 

It is anticipated that these resources will be redirected in the 2004-2005 budget.
