At
the January 30, 2008 meeting of the Transportation
Committee, a local resident, Mr. Brian Larkin, spoke
regarding excessive speeding on Blantyre Road and the
hazards this posed for the residents in the area of Bethel
Academy. Blantyre Road is a collector road, but in this
area it has numerous residences on small lots fronting the
road. Prior enforcement efforts by the Sheriff’s Office
have not deterred many drivers from exceeding the posted
speed limit of 25 miles per hour.
Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Warrenton
Residency Administrator, J. David Cubbage advised the
Transportation Committee that the County Board of
Supervisors could formally request that VDOT install signs
advising of the maximum penalty for exceeding the posted
maximum speed limit. With such signs in place, the fine for
exceeding the speed limit would be $200. The Transportation
Committee unanimously recommended that the Board of
Supervisors request installation of these signs on Blantyre
Road.
Mr. Cubbage has verified that this section of Blantyre Road
meets the VDOT criteria for installation of these signs.
Specifically, the road is a collector road and this area
meets the definition of a “residence district”.
Furthermore, a speeding problem exists in this area, and the
increased penalty has community support.
