Board of Supervisors Meeting Date:

Fauquier County, Owner

Carl Hunt, Applicant

April 15, 2002

Staff Lead:

Brian Davis

Community Development

The applicant is seeking amendment to a Special Exception approval from 2001, which covers non-spectator and spectator events at the Fauquier County Airport in Midland.  Specifically, the applicant is seeking a modification to the hours of operation originally approved, so that non-spectator events associated with an aerobatics competition could be held on Sunday mornings.  Note that the aerobatics competition, currently an annual event, counts as one of the three authorized non-spectator and spectator events that could be held at the airport during a year’s time.  The current approval only allows Sunday events to begin after 12:30 p.m.

Under the applicant’s proposal, non-spectator events could operate from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sundays, with the exception of one hour from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., so as not to interfere with Sunday worship services.  There are no other requested changes to the original conditions of approval.

Requested Action of the Board of Supervisors:

Hold a public hearing and take action.  A Resolution for approval is attached for consideration.

For the Board of Supervisors’ information, the Planning Commission held a public hearing on this request on March 28, 2002.  The applicant and one individual spoke in favor of the request, with no speakers in opposition.

The Planning Commission has forwarded this application to the Board of Supervisors with no recommendation, due to the absence of one Planning Commission member and a deadlocked position by the four Commission members that were present.

Should the Board of Supervisors choose to approve this special exception amendment, a series of conditions, including the applicant’s requested modifications, are included in the resolution at Attachment 1.
