Birmingham
Green is a public facility which is owned by five jurisdictions:
the Counties of Fauquier, Fairfax, Prince William and Loudoun, and
the City of Alexandria. Their
respective departments of Social Services make referrals to
Birmingham Green. Currently,
Fauquier County has several citizens in residence at Birmingham
Green.
The
existing assisted living facility was constructed in 1926, and was
enlarged in the 1940’s and 1950’s. The current facility
suffers serious overcrowding and physical deficiencies, as well
as, accessibility inadequacies.
The facility has never undergone a complete retrofitting
since opening or expanding its capacity and the result is a
facility that is physically and functionally obsolete.
In
order for Birmingham Green to seek funding through HUD Section 202
and Section 811 programs for the purpose of replacing the existing
75-year old facility, the land on which the facility will be built
must be leased to them. A resolution in support of Birmingham Green's application
for the HUD funds was adopted at the March 18, 2002 Board of
Supervisors meeting.
