At
the request of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT),
which has received requests from both citizens and the Sheriff's
Office, and with the concurrence of the Board of Supervisors,
signs advising of the maximum penalty ($200) for exceeding the
speed limit would be installed in the Village of Orlean along
those sections of Leeds Manor Road (Route 688) with a posted
twenty-five (25 mph) miles per hour speed limit.
These signs will be placed at locations VDOT deems
appropriate.
The
Code of Virginia provides that the "…Operation of any motor
vehicle in excess of a maximum speed limit established for a
highway in a residence district, when indicated by appropriately
placed signs displaying the maximum speed limit and the penalty
for violations, shall be unlawful and constitute a traffic
infraction punishable by a fine of not more than $200, in addition
to other penalties provided by law."
At
its March 27, 2002, meeting, the County's Transportation Committee
recommended that the Board of Supervisors approve the request to
install maximum penalty for exceeding the speed limit signs.
