A Resolution to Fund the Purchase of School Buses

Topic Description:

As part of the FY 2006 Budget deliberations, the School Board indicated a need to purchase school buses to replace older vehicles in the school bus fleet.  In a joint Budget meeting between the Board of Supervisors and the School Board, a discussion occurred concerning the possible County funding of one-time issues in the School Division Budget.  In order to balance the School Budget, the School Board cut school bus funding.  The School Division has now requested $495,990 to purchase nine (9) school buses.  If funding is made available to the School Division quickly, 2005 year buses can be purchased at a savings of $2,605 per bus.  These savings are included in the requested amount.

It should also be noted that these buses would be available immediately and would be ready for the beginning of the 2005 2006 school year.  If buses are ordered later, they would be 2006 year buses. These buses would have to be built and unavailable for three to six months after the order is placed, and would not be on hand for the opening of the school year.

Requested Action of the Board of Supervisors:

Consider adoption of the attached resolution.

Financial Impacts Analysis:

The initial funding support will come from the Fund Balance and will be replenished from the unbudgeted impact of the reassessment in FY 2006.
