Topic:              A Resolution to Authorize the Award of a Contract for Construction of the

                        Ensors Shop Road and Blue Mountain Towers for the Public Safety Radio

                        System

Topic Description:

Fauquier County is in the process of constructing two (2) towers as a part of the public safety radio system.  Requests for bids were issued on May 12, 2003 , with a bid opening scheduled for May 30, 2003 .  We expect a number of bids to be received, as was the case with the View Tree Tower bid.

The construction of the two (2) towers is the critical element in the schedule to implement the public safety radio system.  In order to continue efforts to be in a position to test the system this year, authority to award the contract subject, to review by the County Administrator and the County Attorney , is requested.  This procedure is an exception to the normal procedure, which would be to request the Board of Supervisors to award the contract at the June 16, 2003, meeting.

The issuance of the Notice to Proceed for the Blue Mountain site will be withheld until arrangements with the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries are complete.

Requested Action of the Board of Supervisors:

Consider adoption of attached resolution.

Financial Impacts Analysis:

Preliminary budget estimates for the towers, developed in September 2002, are: Ensors Shop Road - $140,000-$206,000 and Blue Mountain – $106,900-$145,500.  Funds for construction of the towers are a part of the capital budget for the public safety radio system.
