A Resolution Authorizing the
Acceptance of Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant
(JAG) Funds |
|
Topic Description: |
| The Federal Government provides limited funding for law enforcement through the
Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, through which
Fauquier County has been awarded a grant in the
amount of $14,161. The Sheriff's Office proposes to use this grant money to
help fund the purchase of specialized equipment necessary for the Sheriff’s
Emergency Response Team (SERT), which is a highly trained and specialized law
enforcement unit. Their purpose is to provide the type of tactical response
necessary to safely diffuse or bring to a closure certain types of high risk or
threatening situations, to include barricaded or suicidal subjects, high risk
search warrants, and drug raids. The equipment will allow the Fauquier County
Sheriff’s Office ability to enhance public safety. Terms of the grant require
that a public hearing be held to allow citizen comment on the proposed use of
these funds.
