Topic: 

A Resolution to Initiate a Referendum During the November Presidential Election for the Imposition of a Food and Beverage Tax in Fauquier County

Topic Description:

Any county is authorized by Section 58.1-3833 of the Code of Virginia to levy a tax on food and beverages sold by a restaurant, not to exceed four percent (4%) of the amount charged for such food or beverage.  The Board of Supervisors wishes to initiate by resolution a referendum during the November presidential election for the imposition of a 4% food and beverage tax.

Requested Action of the Board of Supervisors: 

Consider adoption of the attached resolution.

Financial Impacts Analysis:

The Commissioner of the Revenue estimates potential revenue from a food and beverage tax to be approximately $2.2 million.
