Fauquier County and Fauquier
County Public Schools have been working with the Town of
Warrenton to obtain a fiber optic network infrastructure to
support overall County operations. The project was
originally initiated to connect data and communication lines
between the Joint Communications Center and the Warrenton
Town Police Department. This is required, as the Town
Police building will serve as the back-up emergency dispatch
location and to facilitate Town Police access to the
CAD/Records Management system. The project has been
expanded to upgrade data connections between County offices
and schools located in Warrenton. Installation of the data
lines will enhance data speed on the wide area network
allowing for faster processing of information on all systems
used by County Government such as accounting, land records
and geographic information.
The estimated County cost of
this project is $250,000. Costs include equipment, wire
installation and contract project management. The School
Division will support its requirements separately and the
Town’s cost is an additional $15,000. The Town of Warrenton
will provide funding support for its element of the project.
In addition to improving data flow, some savings will result
with the elimination of the current leased data lines and
cost avoidance in the future as additional leased lines will
not be necessary.
In April 2004, request for
proposals were issued resulting in the selection of Maughan
Construction Company to install the fiber routes that serve
the Town and County. Cost for installation is $153,803.
