Resolution to Request that the Virginia Department of
Transportation Install Signs Advising of the Maximum Penalty
for Exceeding the Posted Maximum Speed Limit in the Village
of Hume

At the request of the Virginia Department of Transportation
(VDOT), who has received requests from citizens, and with
the concurrence of the Board of Supervisors signs advising
of the maximum penalty ($200) for exceeding the speed limit
would be installed in the Village of Hume along those
sections of Leeds Manor Road (Route 688) and Hume Road
(Route 635) with a posted thirty-five (35 mph) mile per hour
speed limit, or lower. These signs will be placed at
locations VDOT deems appropriate.
The Code of Virginia provides that the "…Operation of any
motor vehicle in excess of a maximum speed limit established
for a highway in a residence district, when indicated by
appropriately placed signs displaying the maximum speed
limit and the penalty for violations, shall be unlawful and
constitute a traffic infraction punishable by a fine of not
more than $200, in addition to other penalties provided by
law."

attached resolution.

Recommendation:

|
On July 28, 2004, the County’s Transportation Committee
recommended that the Board of Supervisors approve the
request to install maximum penalty for exceeding the speed
limit signs.
