A Resolution to Request that the Virginia Department of Transportation Install Signs Advising of the Maximum Penalty for Exceeding the Posted Maximum Speed Limit in the Village of Hume

Topic Description:

At the request of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), who has received requests from citizens, and with the concurrence of the Board of Supervisors signs advising of the maximum penalty ($200) for exceeding the speed limit would be installed in the Village of Hume along those sections of Leeds Manor Road (Route 688) and Hume Road (Route 635) with a posted thirty-five (35 mph) mile per hour speed limit, or lower.  These signs will be placed at locations VDOT deems appropriate.

The Code of Virginia provides that the "…Operation of any motor vehicle in excess of a maximum speed limit established for a highway in a residence district, when indicated by appropriately placed signs displaying the maximum speed limit and the penalty for violations, shall be unlawful and constitute a traffic infraction punishable by a fine of not more than $200, in addition to other penalties provided by law."

Requested Action of the Board of Supervisors:

Transportation Committee Recommendation:

On July 28, 2004, the County’s Transportation Committee recommended that the Board of Supervisors approve the request to install maximum penalty for exceeding the speed limit signs.
