Topic:  A Resolution to Establish a Fauquier County Public Schools Textbook Fund

Topic Description:

The Fauquier County School Board approved a resolution requesting the establishment of a Textbook Fund (copy attached).  The Textbook Fund will help facilitate the long-term planning and funding for the replacement of this critical resource.  The procurement of textbooks is a high dollar outlay, and may fluctuate significantly from year to year.  The establishment of a fund will enable the School Board to stabilize annual budgets and to “save” for the replacement of textbooks in favorable years.  Also, this fund will enable the School Board to capture the textbook expenditures as part of the School’s financial reports.  Currently, these expenditures are reflected in the County’s Capital Fund.  Expenditures in this fund will be restricted to the purchase of textbooks and related media.  Surpluses will be maintained in the fund for future textbook needs.

Requested Action of the Board of Supervisors:

Consider adoption of the attached resolution.

Financial Impacts Analysis:

Enhances financial planning and budgeting for the procurement of textbooks, and may facilitate implementation of the long-term plan for textbook replacement.
