RESOLUTION

A RESOLUTION TO RECOMMEND THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR’S

“ALL AMERICAN ROAD” DESIGNATION FOR U.S. ROUTES 15/29

WHEREAS, in May 2008, the United States Congress approved legislation to create the Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area that includes all of Fauquier County; and

WHEREAS, this legislation creates a National Heritage Area corridor that includes Route 15, Route 15/29 from its nexus in Prince William County, Route 15 through Warrenton, and Route 15/29 south of Warrenton, through Routes 20/231/22 from Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello in Charlottesville north to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, designation of the Journey Through Hallowed Ground as a National Heritage Area, and the aforementioned Routes as an “All American Road” within the National Scenic Byways Program, will help support the four-state public/private partnership that has been developed to promote and celebrate the historical and cultural resources along the route; and

WHEREAS, designation as a National Heritage Area and “All American Road” will make federal funds available to government entities located along this corridor for the purposes of developing tourism, preservation and enhancement of historical sites and battlefields; and

WHEREAS, the “All American Road” status will help to improve this historic corridor as a gateway to some of the most important places in our country’s history, including Native American and African-American historic sites, the homes of our Nation’s forefathers, numerous Civil War battlefields, and dozens of historic towns and villages; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors this 9th day of October 2008, That the Board hereby supports the “All American” Scenic Byway Designation for Route 15/29 through Fauquier County; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors will utilize Federal funds available for such purposes to encourage tourism, preservation and enhancement of the region’s historic sites and battlefields.
