A Resolution to the Remington Town Council Supporting its Grant Application to Achieve Comprehensive Plan Goals for Bike Path and Pedestrian Connections through Historic Remington and Connecting to the Remington Service District

Topic Description:

The Town of Remington is seeking a grant award from the Virginia Department of Transportation for the purpose of planning bicycle and pedestrian lanes through downtown, historic Remington and connecting to community facilities and neighborhoods in the Remington Service District.  In preparation for a grant application deadline of November 1, 2007 to VDOT, a Town Council member is seeking a resolution of support from the County for this grant and planning effort.

Requested Action of the Board of Supervisors:

Consider adoption of the attached resolution.

Summary Staff Report:

The referenced grant is for purposes of the Town planning a bicycle and pedestrian route through downtown, historic Remington.  The Town of Remington anticipates that grant funds will be utilized to develop more detailed plans consistent with both the County’s and the Town’s Comprehensive Plans, as well as the Fauquier County Connections Plan.  With assistance from a public university, town citizen participation will drive the planning effort.  Some engineering design work may be included.  This recreation and transportation connection will provide many benefits to the Town and County when realized including increased opportunities for tourism, patrons for Main Street businesses, and connections to public facilities such as schools and the planned Rappahannock Station Battlefield Park.

This enhancement grant project is likely to be the first of many projects that will help showcase Remington’s small town appeal, its National Register Historic District, locally owned businesses, and Civil War history. 

This grant will be administered by the Town of Remington, but County staff assistance will be required to ensure logical connections to the service district and County public facilities are considered.
