On October 25, 2004, the
School Board adopted a resolution to request an additional
$3,650,000 to renovate Claude Thompson Elementary School.
The Board of Supervisors reviewed this request during a a
work session on November 10, 2004, at which time
staff was directed to schedule a public hearing on this
issue for the December 9, 2004 meeting.
Background:
In fiscal year 2003, $3.1
million was approved in the FY 2004 – FY 2008 Capital
Improvement Plan for renovation of Claude Thompson
Elementary School. Funding was included for two years (FY
2004/05). The first borrowing of $1,572,000 was completed in
FY 2004. In May of FY 2004 the School Board’s architects
provided a revised cost estimate of over $8.0 million for
the project. After several months of deliberations and
public hearings the School Board adopted a modified concept
plan for $6.8 million. The School Board is asking the Board
of Supervisors to amend the currently approved CIP and
appropriate the additional funding of $3,650,000. This
amount does not include $465,000 for the leasing of trailers
at Coleman or approximately $559,000 for furniture and
equipment. The School Board has indicated it will support
these requirements through other means.
