The Virginia Department of
Emergency Management has awarded $882,130 in grant funds for
P25 software upgrades to existing public safety mobile and
portable radios, as part of the 2009 State Homeland Security
Program. This award has been made jointly to Fauquier and
Prince William Counties for upgrades to 1,297 radios, as the
result of an application submitted by Fauquier County. The
primary recipient of grant funds is Fauquier County,
allowing the upgrade of approximately 550 Fauquier-owned
mobile and portable radios, with the remaining radio
upgrades to be allocated to Prince William County. Funding
for this grant will be awarded in advance of the purchase
and installation of the software.
The proposed upgrade will
allow the Public Safety Radio System to interface with the
recently upgraded Loudoun and Stafford County systems;
without this upgrade, interoperability with these counties
will cease, negatively impacting the counties’ ability
provide a coordinated response to disaster.
Appropriation of these
funds, $882,130, is requested at this time in order to take
advantage of a discounted price offered by Motorola through
mid-December. |
