Current Events & News

  • Register for the popular Forum for Rural Innovation scheduled for Friday, March 9 at the Best Western Lee-Jackson Motor Inn and Conference Center in Winchester. This year’s theme is: Direct Marketing: Beyond Farmers Markets.
    The eighth annual Rural Innovation Forum will feature presentations on agri-education programs, value-added product development, and the benefits of using social media and technology to gain exposure to your business. The purpose of the Forum is to showcase new and exciting programs and projects that enhance farm or rural business profitability. Use the registration form on the brochure. Pre-registration is required by March 1st.

  • Fauquier County has recently been nominated for a Virginia Beginning Farmer and Rancher Grant by Virginia Tech. When fully approved by USDA, the grant will allow the Fauquier County Agricultural Development Department, in collaboration with Virginia Cooperative Extension in Fauquier, Rappahannock and Madison Counties, and the Fauquier Education Farm to develop and offer a two year Beginning Farmer training program. The program will be offered through a combination of on-line sessions, webinars and field demonstrations/labs at the Education Farm and a number of local commercial farms. Please join us for an informational social at the Fauquier Extension Office (23 Pelham Street, Warrenton) on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 6:30pm. Or fill out and print an application form here.

  • A new workbook to help farmers plan the transition of their farm or forest property from one generation to another is now available from Virginia Cooperative Extension. “Planning the Future of Your Farm: A Workbook Supporting Farm Transfer Decisions” contains useful information on developing a vision for the future, evaluating your farm resources, farm transfer tools and meeting with professional advisors. Click on this link to learn more. Copies are now available at the Agricultural Development Department office.
