Do I have to have an EBSCOhost account in order to access EBSCOhost e-books?
If you are using the library’s catalog from within any Fauquier Library branch, you do not need an EBSCOhost account in order to view an e-book. In order to view and download e-books from home, however, you will need a EBSCOhost account.

How do I create an EBSCOhost account?
If you wish to access e-books from outside the library, check out e-books, create bookmarks, save notes, or download e-books, you will need to create an EBSCOhost user account.

  1. From the library’s EBSCOhost login page, you will need to enter in your Fauquier County Public Library card number to pass through to the EBSCOhost website;
  2. Click on the Sign in link in the top right corner of the EBSCOhost main page;
  3. Click on "Create a new Account" link in the upper-right corner;.
  4. Enter your identifying information (user name, e-mail address, etc.) and create a password.
  5. Complete by selecting the Save Changes button;

If you have any problems or need assistance creating an account from home, call your local library at (540) 422-8500, ext. 6862 and speak with a reference librarian who will walk you through creating an account.

How do I access my new EBSCOhost account?
Once you've created your EBSCOhost account (either at the library or the library’s EBSCOhost login page), you can access your account using the following methods:

  1. From the URL http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?authtype=user&profile=ehost, log in with your EBSCOhost username and password;
  2. From the library's catalog, find an e-book. When you click on the link to take you to the item on the EBSCOhost site, you will be prompted to log in with your EBSCOhost username and password;

How can I find e-books and e-audio books?
You may search for e-books and e-audio books on the OverDrive, OneClickdigital and EBSCOhost websites or in the catalog. To search for e-book/e-audio books in the library catalog: use the Advanced Search page. Enter your search terms and limit to "EBOOKS" in the Material Type menu for e-books and/or “E-AUDIOBOOKS” for e-audio books. Do not limit the location field to any specific branch. You can also browse e-audio books and e-books by call number.

Please note that if you limited your search to a specific collection (Children's Collection, Bealeton Collection, etc.), e-books/e-audio books will not come up in your search results. You must make sure your search allows you to View Entire Collection.

What are the differences between the different e-book/e-audio book providers?

When I try and create an OverDrive account, my library card does not work.
In order to use OverDrive, library patrons must have a valid Fauquier County Public Library card. Patrons who have cards that are expired, blocked or reported lost/stolen will not be able to create an account and/or check out e-books, e-audio books through OverDrive. Please contact your local library for any questions regarding your account.

Will the Amazon Kindle work with the library's e-books?
Yes, as of Sept. 21, the library's e-book collection through OverDrive is compatible with the Amazon Kindle. Check out this how-to video that shows you how to browse, checkout and get e-books for the Kindle. The quick version is as follows:

  1. Go to the Blue Ridge Download Consortium
  2. Select Advanced Search and limit the format to Kindle Book. You can also limit by title, author, only what is available; otherwise, you’ll just get a large list of all Kindle Books, available for checkout or titles you can place a hold on;
  3. After you've added a title to your cart and proceeded to checkout (you will have to authenticate with your library card, if you haven't already done so), click on the "Get for Kindle" button;
  4. You will be taken to the Amazon website and will need to sign in with your Kindle account name and password;
  5. On Amazon, click the Get Library Book button (you can select which Kindle device if you have more than 1 Kindle device/application associated with your account);
  6. Amazon automatically sends it to your device once you connect your Kindle to a Wi-fi connection (it won't work on the Amazon 3G); KindleFire users may need to refresh their Wi-fi connection (turn device off/back on) for the book to show up. It will be in the Books section.

Can library staff recommend a particular e-book reader for purchase?
Library staff can refer you to current e-book reader purchasing guides, including Consumer Reports, which is available at all three library branches, and online review sources featured in the eResource News article on eReader Reviews & How-Tos.

Will library staff help me learn to download e-books?
Yes.  Library staff will assist you with the process for checking out e-books.  Library staff cannot configure or set up your device, but will gladly walk you through the e-book-to-e-reader process. Visit the reference desk at any library location for assistance.  For links to specific e-reader support sites and reviews, see the library’s e-books and e-audio books page.

Will library staff show me how to configure/troubleshoot my laptop/e-reader/mobile device?
Reference staff at any library location can  help you find information to assist you as you configure and troubleshoot your device(s). However, library staff cannot assist you with the operation, configuration or troubleshooting of your personal electronic device(s) -- the library assumes no responsibility for patrons' equipment.

How many e-books/e-audio books may I check out/download at one time?

  • e-books/e-audio books on OverDrive: 10 per account
  • e-books on EBSCOhost: 50 per account
  • e-audio books on OneClickdigital: 10 per account

For how long can I check out e-books and e-audio books?

  • e-books/e-audio books on OverDrive: You may check out OverDrive e-books and e-audio books for a maximum of 14 days. You can also opt to check materials out for just 7 days if so desired. You can change your checkout option from 14 to 7 days by logging into the Blue Ridge Download Consortium website (this is not an option in the mobile app).
  • e-books on EBSCOhost: Checkout periods will vary. Please log in to your EBSCOhost account and click the "My Checkouts" link at the top of the screen to find the time remaining on your checkout period.
  • e-audio books on OneClickdigital: You may check out OneClickdigital e-audio books for 21 days (3 weeks), after which the license will expire. The file will still be on your computer or portable device, but it will not be playable.

May I return my e-books early?
Only OverDrive e-books (not e-audio titles) can be returned early, and the process for returning titles varies depending on the type of reader you are using. Here are the directions for the most common readers.

Readers accessed with Adobe Digital Editions

  • Open Adobe Digital Editions on your computer
  • Go to your library
  • Click the small arrow to the left of the title you want to return
  • Choose "Return borrowed item"
  • Click "Return" in the window that pops up

Mobile devices (iPad, iPod, etc.)

  • Open the Overdrive Media Console app on your device
  • Go to your list of titles
  • Swipe to the left over the arrow that is located to the right of the title you want to return
  • Touch the "Delete" link
  • Choose "Return and Delete" in the window that pops up

Amazon Kindle or Kindle app on mobile device

  • Go to Amazon.com and login to your account
  • Click on My Account
  • Under Order History, click on View Your Kindle Orders
  • Find the title that you want to return (it will say "Public Library" in orange next to the title
  • Click the button that says "Actions" located to the right of the title you want to return
  • Choose "Return to Library"

May I return my e-audio books early?
OneClickdigital Users: If you have finished listening to an audio book before the expiration date and you would like to return it and check out another title you may do so from the OneClickdigital Media Manager. Simply click on the button that says Return Now under the information for the title in question under the Checked Out tab.

OverDrive Mobile Users: If you are using OverDrive® Media Console™ v2.4 for Android™, BlackBerry®, Windows Phone or for iOS —iPhone®, iPad®, iPod touch®, you can return e-audio books early. There is no ETA on this feature for desktop versions (per OverDrive February 2012).

May I download e-books and/or download and listen to e-audiobooks on library computers?
No. You cannot download e-books or download/listen to e-audio books on the library's computers. Fauquier County Public Library’s security policies prevent downloading to public computers. However, patrons who use the Amazon Kindle may check out e-books for the Kindle at the library using the library's computers. The next time their Kindle connects to a Wi-Fi connection (the library's wireless, etc.), the book will automatically download to their Kindle.

How can I tell what Adobe ID I registered my device to?
On your computer, open Adobe Digital Editions (ADE). At the top click on the dropdown arrow next to the word LIBRARY. Click on AUTHORIZE COMPUTER. If your computer has been authorized it will tell you what email address (Adobe ID) it was authorized to.

On any mobile device where the Overdrive App was downloaded, open the Overdrive App. At the top right, click on Get Books +. Then click on Settings at the bottom of the screen. If you have authorized your device, it will tell you what email address (Adobe ID) it was authorized to.
