General Relief, Auxiliary Grants, State and Local Hospitalization

General Relief is a short term assistance program to help with specific emergency or interim maintenance situations.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. The applicant must have an emergency need.
  2. This emergency need must have resulted from a change in circumstances within the last 60 days beyond the applicant's control
  3. The applicant must be a resident of Fauquier County.
  4. The applicant must be ineligible for aid in a federal category (TANF/Temporary Assistance to Needy Families)
  5. The applicant must be a citizen or an eligible alien.
  6. Must apply for all other available benefits.

Income:

Actual available gross income for the month of application.

Maximum Income
1 person $903
2 persons $1215
3 persons $1526

Emergency Shelter Needs:

  1. Rent - up to $500.00 for one month in a 6 month period (NO DEPOSITS).
  2. Utility - up to $500.00 for one month in a 6 month period (NO DEPOSITS).
  3. Total Shelter - all shelter needs may not exceed $500.00 in one month in a 6 month period.

Emergency Medical Needs:

  1. Physicians - Max. $75
  2. Prescription Drugs - Max. $200
  3. Medical Supplies - Max. $75
  4. Dental - Max. $75
  5. Medical Transportation - Max. $50
  6. Medical Appliances - Max. $50
  7. Laboratory - Max. $100
  8. X-ray - Max. $100
  9. Total Maximums for all medical needs may not exceed $350 in one month in a six month period.
  10. Assistance for all medical needs may be provided in only one month in every 6.
  11. Assistance for Burial - Max. $500. A family can supplement up to a total of $1200. Funeral plan must have all services and costs itemized.
  12. Food credit authorization -maximum $100

On Going Medical Assistance: (GR Type 42)

Persons whose capacity for employment is substantially affected for 30 days or more by physical or mental disability certified by a physician on a PA-9.

  1. Interim Assistance (GR Type 40)
    Persons who have applied for SSI or who are eligible to apply for SSI because of disability (Disability that will last 12 months or result in death). Disability must be certified by a physician on a PA-9. Eligibility exists only until the initial determination of eligibility or ineligibility by SSA. No Interim Assistance eligibility exists during the SSI appeal period.

Maintenance:

Assistance for the Unattached Child: (GR Type 45) Help is provided only to those children who would be eligible for TANF except that they did not meet the TANF relationship requirements with the current caretaker.

Application Basics

To file: Applicant completes an Application form.
The eligibility worker must substantiate income, resources, and eligibility determination for the appropriate GR type.

Auxiliary Grants (AG)

AG is a financial assistance supplement for recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and certain other aged, blind or disabled individuals who are residing in a licensed Assisted Living Facility (ALF) or in an Adult Foster Care (AFC) home approved by Social Services.

  1. Categorical relationship
    1. Aged - over 65
    2. Blind
    3. Permanently and totaled disabled (18-64)
  2. Residency - must reside in Fauquier County or been placed as private pay in state licensed home for adults (and has expended all resources).
  3. Citizenship - must be a citizen or alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence or otherwise permanently residing in the U.S. under color of law.
  4. There must be a need (no other alternative living arrangements).
  5. Must be eligible for SSI or have applied for and been denied because of excess income above SSI level.
  6. Must be residing in a state licensed home for adults.
  7. The ongoing approved rate for Home for Adults is $1279.00 and $81.00 personal allowance for each recipient.
  8. All income is applied to total cost. If recipient receives a combination of any two incomes (SSA & SSI), SSI & VA) they are given an extra $20.00 for personal allowance.
  9. Resources - one person $2,000.

State and Local Hospitalization

SLH is designed to pay for hospital costs for inpatient or outpatient hospital stays. SLH does not pay for associated doctor's costs. It is available to participating hospitals only. Eligibility lasts for 180 days from initial eligibility. Regulations include:

  1. Resident of Fauquier County
  2. Citizen or alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence or otherwise permanently residing in the U.S. under color of law.
  3. Must have a need for coverage of in-patient or out-patient hospitalization.
  4. Must apply within 30 days of service.
  5. Income based on month of application and two previous months.
  6. SLH Income Standard
    • $903 monthly - 1 person
    • $1215 monthly - 2 persons
    • $1526 monthly - 3 persons

Resources - cash, checking, savings, CD, Christmas Club, Money Market, Credit Union.

The limits are $2,000 for one person and $3,000 for two people.
