Adult Paranormal Investigations: John Barton Payne Building
The John Barton Payne building was built in 1924 on the site of a private residence that burned during the Great Warrenton Fire in 1909. During the fire many of the buildings on Ashby, Waterloo and Winchester Streets burned, including the mid-1890s firehouse in Courthouse Square. Before the fire, the Red Store, a trading post in the late 18th century, sat in the square which served as the heart of Warrenton's government, business, and communal activity with markets, social gatherings, parades and concerts. In total, 26 buildings were lost to the fire or from blasts to make a break so the fire would not spread. The John Barton Payne building served as Warrenton's first library until 1982 thanks to a generous donation from the individual for whom it was named.
