 Wondering what 4-H offers?

4-H

Open to youth in Fauquier ages 9-19. 4-H is a youth development organization that aims to teach youth about life through hands-on, experiential learning. Fauquier has a broad range of offerings for youth including camps, clubs, special programs, in school activities and contests in a variety of areas. Youth in our clubs work together on similar projects and interests and meet monthly for most of the year for activities and educational opportunities. We have clubs in livestock, animal science, shooting sports, games, and more! Kids ages 5-8 are included in our Cloverbud program.

 Fauquier Livestock Show & Sale

A youth led organization open to Fauquier 4-Her’s and FFA members to raise, show, market, and sell market livestock projects. This is an in-depth program that is a great opportunity to learn important life skills like public speaking, problem solving, teamwork, business etiquette, and much more.  Fauquier Fair

While the fair is open to everyone, the Livestock Shows are primarily facilitated by Extension. These livestock shows are an opportunity for youth to exhibit their poultry, rabbits, dairy goats, dairy cattle, sheep, meat goats, and beef cattle. Youth are encouraged to participate in a 4-H Club or FFA Chapter to receive support for their projects. For more information, visit: fauquierfair.org.

 Contest Teams

Within 4-H there are many contest team opportunities, there are many outside of agriculture, like Food Challenge or Public Speaking, we also have judging teams, knowledge-based contest teams, and cattle working teams. These contests cover either market livestock, dairy, or horses.

 Next Generation Entrepreneurs

An incredible opportunity in conjunction with local farmers markets for youth to dive deeper into their entrepreneurship ideas. Youth will learn about business planning, marketing, and selling their products in person at the markets. We have had youth sell everything from handmade items to locally grown meat and produce, as well as baked goods and prepared foods.

 Poultry Service Learning Project

An opportunity for youth ages 9-19 to learn about livestock, agriculture, and many life skills, while also giving back to the community. Thanks to grants from organizations like the PATH Foundation and the Northern Piedmont Community Foundation, we are able to provide participants with 10 laying hens and feed for the duration of the project. Youth and families are in turn expected to donate the eggs that those hens produce to the local food pantries. Over the past four years, this project has donated over 111,000 dozen eggs and in conjunction with livestock processed from our Show & Sale, over 190,000 portions of protein have been donated to those in need in our own community.
