Fauquier County Administrator Presents FY 2027 Proposed Budget
Fauquier County Administrator Janelle J. Downes presented the FY 2027 Proposed Budget to the Board of Supervisors on March 3, 2026. The total Proposed Budget is $460.0 million.
The Proposed real estate tax rate for Tax Year 2026 is $0.911 per $100 of assessed value, a decrease of $0.056 from the prior rate of $0.967. The General rate decreases to $0.725, the Fire Rescue levy decreases to $0.182, and the Conservation Easement rate remains $0.004. The County advertised a maximum rate of $0.913, and the adopted rate cannot exceed that amount.
The 2026 reassessment increased overall assessed property values by 22.3 percent and total taxable value by 26.8 percent. Residential values increased 21.9 percent, commercial and industrial properties zoned for data centers increased 58.2 percent, parcels between twenty and one hundred acres increased 8.2 percent, multi-family properties increased 25.4 percent, and parcels greater than one hundred acres increased 17.4 percent. The median residential assessment increased 15.8 percent, from $460,445 to $533,400.
Based on the average residential assessment of $533,400, the annual tax increase under the Proposed rate would be $406.77, or $33.90 per month.
Compared to the FY 2026 Adopted Budget, the Proposed Budget includes a $10.1 million increase in the General Fund, a $16.3 million increase in School Funds, an $8.8 million increase in the Capital Improvement Fund, and a $6.1 million increase in the Fire Rescue System Fund. The County Asset Replacement Fund decreases by $12.8 million, and all other funds combined increase by $2.3 million. Overall local tax funding increases by $17,106,779, or 7.3 percent.
The Proposed Budget provides a 3.0 percent compensation increase for general workforce employees. Those on the Sheriff’s Office pay scale will receive a step increase, and a 6.8 percent pay scale market adjustment. Those on the 911 pay scale will receive an average of 3.0 percent. Fire Rescue employees receive a step increase. Seven new positions added to support existing services.
The School Division Operating Fund totals $191,978,078, a $9.1 million increase supported by $6.8 million in additional state funding and a $2.3 million increase in local recurring funds. Local support is projected to fund 50.4 percent of total School Division expenditures.
The FY 2027–2031 Capital Improvement Program totals $136.52 million. Planned allocations include $85.5 million for a new Judicial Center, $28.0 million for School Division projects, $16.9 million for Fire Rescue projects, and $3.1 million each for Airport and Parks and Recreation projects. An additional $178.05 million is designated for future fiscal years. Debt service increases by approximately $1,554,580 to support approved capital projects.
