MP buildings and flags 2024

The Gold Mining Camp Museum at Monroe Park, the official Gold Mining Interpretive Center for the Commonwealth of Virginia, is the only museum in Virginia solely dedicated to the history of gold and gold mining. Monroe Park is located off Route 17 in Goldvein, Virginia. Although this was not the site of an actual mine, nineteen mine sites existed within five miles of the park.

The three museum buildings interpret structures found at a 1930's mine with exhibits, displays, and signage inside the buildings and on the grounds. Camping is not allowed in the park.

The Gold Mining Camp Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Sunday noon to 4:00 pm.

The sluice is now open for the season when the museum is open. Gold panning demonstrations are held Wednesday through Sunday at 2 pm. Please be aware, the sand in the sluice does not contain any gold.

Bags of gems, minerals, and/or fossils, prospecting equipment, and our souvenirs are for sale in the Mess Hall/Park Office at any time.

Parks and Recreation awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Grant!

In September 2019, The Gold Mining Camp Museum was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Assistance Grant for Smaller Institutions in order to assess the conditions of the artifact storage areas of the department.  This funding allowed the department to contract with Mr. Donald Cumberland, a museum consultant who specializes in museum collection storage and emergency operations planning with 30 years experience working for the National Park Service and the Department of the Interior, to create a Museum Storage Assessment. This report will be used to direct the efforts of the department to better fulfill its mission to protect and preserve the department's historical and archaeological collections.
