The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) is responsible for investigating major crimes and serious misdemeanor cases.
CID consists of two primary investigating functions: Major Crimes and the Street Crimes Unit. CID also has a Crime Analysis Unit.
Major Crimes detectives are responsible for investigating sex offenses, crimes against children, financial and property crimes, larceny, robbery, arson, burglary, homicide and death investigations, as well as other violent felonies. We also have detectives who are certified Crime Scene Technicians through the Department of Forensic Science, and detectives who are certified in the forensic download of electronic devices and cellular mapping and analysis.
The Street Crimes Unit specialize in crimes involving narcotics, gangs, and other street-level misdemeanor and felony crimes. This unit assists with major criminal investigations as needed, and is designed to be a specialized proactive unit to suppress ongoing criminal activity.
The Crime Analysis Unit provides specialized assistance through tactical, strategic, and intelligence- generated products for criminal investigations. They provide information to the entire agency and work with command staff, deputies, and detectives to share information, analyze crime trends, and assist with investigative leads.
CID also has a Criminal Investigations Associate responsible for administrative duties, case management, and statistics.

CID works closely with the Department of Social Services, Warrenton Police Department, and the Fauquier County Commonwealth’s Attorneys Office, as well as our Federal partners, to successfully investigate and prosecute cases.
